348 Pages

In June 1880, newlyweds Jacob and Julia travel from Boston to Iowa to fulfill Jacob’s dream of owning a farm. When they arrive, their original plan falls apart and Jacob wonders if he’ll be able to keep the promise he made to Julia and her family?

Jacob and Julia spend time in prayer, and God provides a better plan. Jacob knows his direction, but now, upper-class Julia must consider her new role. She’s never been in a kitchen, let alone on a farm. How will she manage their home?

After many mishaps, Julia asks a neighbor for help and gains confidence as she learns to cook, garden and handle other household duties. Jacob and Julia grow closer, but a personal loss for Julia triggers a disagreement leading to estrangement and deeper issues Jacob must confront. Can their faith in God bring forgiveness and reconciliation?

Reviewer’s comments: It’s a wonderful story about Jacob and Julia Anderson having just wed, setting out on a journey to the Midwest to realize Jacob’s dream of owning a farm. But in 1880, the Iowa Territory had only had its statehood for 34 years. Still a rough and rugged land for anyone, but for a Bostonian-elite like Julia, too in love to know what life held in store for her in the West, it proves a challenge. Unaccustomed to the hard work of prairie life, and unskilled in the menial tasks of cooking, baking, canning, cleaning, laundry, and gardening, she accepts the challenge to her new life and learns the meaning of true love and the power of God.
