After her fiancé dies in a buggy accident, Lydia Hershberger is invited to Jamesport to manage her Mennonite aunt’s gift shop while her aunt and uncle are on a mission trip. While there, Lydia gets acquainted with her aentie’s best friend, Bethel Bontrager, and her grown son, Caleb. Lydia is surprised to find herself drawn to handsome clockmaker, Caleb Bontrager. But in spite of an instant flame of attraction between them, he doesn’t seem interested. In fact, pesky Caleb treats her like he doesn’t even like her.

Bright and sparkly. That’s Caleb’s first impression of Lydia. He’s always been attracted to sparkly things. In fact, his affinity for those things, and the trouble they can cause, are exactly why he’s determined to change his ways and settle down. With Lydia’s aentie gone, he is handling the books for the gift shop and forced to spend time in Lydia's presence.

When God offers Lydia a second chance at love and family, will she take it? Or will the secret Caleb harbors cause her even more heartbreak?

Love by the Number by Laura V. Hilton, won this reviewer's heart from the very first page, and from there, the story turned into a terrific read. Ms. Hilton is a wizard at matchmaking her hero and heroine and making their courtship a spectacular read. The characters are well developed and their problems to overcome are relatable.

Amish Book Review

Book Review: The Amish Candy Maker by Laura V. Hilton

The Amish Candy Maker

A letter brings him to Mackinac County. Can one woman make him stay?

Agnes Zook has found herself on her own in a small Amish community in Mackinac County after a tragedy took the life of her parents and siblings. Most of the Amish call her “off in den Kopf” (strange) since she’s starting her own business and forging her own way in the community instead of relying on the bishop to take care of her. Since she’s viewed as non-submissive and too-forward for an Amish woman she’s not courted by other young men in the area.

Isaac Mast is on the verge of leaving the Amish church. He’s become a sought-after Auctioneer and has a thriving business, but he feels confined by the strict rules. When his brother is severely injured in a wild fire, Isaac receives a letter from his sister-in-law, begging him to come to Mackinac County to help out while his brother is hospitalized for skin grafts and his wife is with him. They have young children that can’t be left alone. Isaac agrees but is unsure how to manage the children when he has weekend auctions he’s expected to attend. Agnes may be an answer to prayer.

When Isaac and Agnes meet, sparks fly, but everything changes. While neither of them fit within the structures of the Amish faith, could their differences be the one thing that helps them form a deeper connection to their faith . . . and each other?

The Amish Candy Maker by Laura V. Hilton is an intriguing plot that captures the reader's attention from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the very end. A must read that will find a permanent spot on your book shelf.

The Amish of Mackinac County Series

Kindle, paperback (July 10, 2018)

Whitaker House Publishing

Firestorm

After a stalker breaks into their home, Bridget Behr and her family migrate from the bustling Amish community where she grew up in Ohio to the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While her father and brother try to find work in Michigan, the family is forced to reside in a borrowed RV until the house and barn are rebuilt. While Bridget is hoping for a fresh start, she’s afraid to trust anyone—even Gabriel, the overly-friendly Amish man who lives nearby. Bridget thinks he’s a flirt who serial dates and doesn’t even remember the girls’ names.

Due to a lack of construction jobs in his Florida community to keep Gabriel Lapp out of trouble, he has been sent to Michigan to work. His father is desperate for his son to settle down. When the Behr family walks into Gabe’s home in the middle of a thunderstorm, he learns of their circumstances and offers to help them rebuild. For Gabe, the beautiful Bridget he teasingly calls “the recluse,” after he discovers she doesn’t attend youth events, confuses him like none other.

As Gabriel and Bridget grow closer, they realize there is more to a person than meets the eye. Just as Bridget is finally settling into her new life, and perhaps finding love, tragedy strikes. Now Bridget and her family must decide if they should move to another Amish community, or dare to fight for the future they’d hoped for in Mackinac County.

Firestorm by Laura V. Hilton is an artfully crafted novel with well-developed characters, a unique story-line and theme, with twists and turns to make it a page-turner.

Love Inspired Books

Love Inspired books make a great summer read...

Have you ever read a Harlequin® Love Inspired® novel? They are short novels of Christian inspiration and are the perfect size to slip into your pocket or purse and take anywhere. The LI line includes: contemporary, historical, suspense, and Amish. Below are my reviews for three of the books in this line.

The Texas Rancher's Return by Allie Pleiter is contemporary and a very sweet read. Gunner Buckton has come home to take over the family Bison ranch, Blue Thorn. Although he has matured, he is soured by a failed relationship where the woman used him and stomped on his heart. Brooke Calder has slowly managed to knock off some of his distrust of women until he finds out the company she works for, DelTex, is out to swindle him out of his land. The question is, whose side is Brooke on. Was she just playing up to him to help DelTex get his land? I loved the story. It was  well-written and the characters well-developed. I'll read this one again.

Mail Order Mix-Up by Christine Johnson was the best historical romance novels I've read in a long time. It takes place in 1870 Singapore, Michigan. Pearl Lawson has signed a contract with the Singapore school that she cannot marry while under contract. But when she sees an advertisement in a New York newspaper for a mail-order bride she takes along her friend, Amanda, who desperately wants to marry. On board the Milwaukee, they run into Mr. Decker and they mistake him for the man looking for the bride. But this Mr. Roland Decker is not looking for a bride and he assumes his brother Garrett submitted the ad. Pearl has a crisp, take-charge attitude that Rolland likes and does appreciate her company. The story is fun, lively, and a page-turner to see who would marry and who would not by the end of the story.

Amish Refuge by Debby Giusti is a stunningly terrific suspenseful read! Yet, it is a very sweet read at the same time that it has a lot of tension, plots twists, and scenes that bring you to tears, then warms your heart. Miriam Miller's family was once Amish and now in search of her sister, she finds herself thrown back into a community she knows little about. Miriam Miller is running from a man and happens onto a farm outside Willkommen, Georgia, owned by Abram Zook, an Amish man. Abram takes her in and hides her and is the only person she can trust. He is Amish and a very determined man to protect her. After all he has done for her, Mariam has to make a choice: stay or leave. I've read this book twice and will read again. This book qualifies as both an Amish read and a Suspense read.
